Finding Wisdom and Inspiration in the American Past

How to Make Sense of the Diversity Challenge
To Build A Prosperous and Tolerant Future

About the Presentation

Is America coming apart?
Is there such thing as too much diversity?
Does diversity harm our economy?

These are some of the burning questions being debated in schools, neighborhoods, the workplace, and the media as Americans enter the new millennium. More than two-thirds of all Americans are minorities, immigrants, or the immediate descendents of immigrants. Most are proud of their ethnic or racial group’s success and assimilation into American society. Yet they and other Americans often express uneasiness over, if not outright hostility toward, the increasing diversification of American society.

What is missing in this debate over the diversity challenge is an awareness of the larger historical story of American multiculturalism. Thus, I look at how America became a multicultural society, the triumphs and failures that have accompanied this process, and what challenges face our diverse society as we enter the new millennium.

THIS ENGAGING AND INFORMATIVE SESSION WILL HELP PARTICIPANTS TO:

1. understand the rich and complex history of American multiculturalism
2. identify the key sources of both ethnic\racial conflict and cooperation
3. move beyond prevailing myths about minorities and immigrants
4. renew their commitment to building tolerant workplace and society
5. make the most of the opportunities presented by a diverse society
